Mooring buoy is a floating structure which is used to moor vessels either cruise ships, fishing boats, cargo ships, or private ships while in deep water or shallow water. The buoy is moored to seabed by using chains or ropes, known as mooring.

Jerryborg mooring buoys are especially designed to provide outstanding performance in the toughest environments, and due to their low maintenance and high pull-through strength, Jerryborg Marine Systems Mooring Buoys are rapidly replacing traditional steel mooring buoys.

The buoy is constructed from closed cell rigid urethane floatation foam encapsulated with a protective layer of polyurethane elastomer around a custom designed steel column. The resilient material makes the buoys self fendering with a high impact absorption capacity.

Purpose of Mooring Buoy Installation

The purposes of mooring buoy installation are first, to avoid ships releasing anchors to seafloor so the marine ecosystem is maintained, and second, to assist ships to dock at safe distance in order to reduce the possibility of ships hitting the seafloor.

Material of the Buoy

100% closed cell macromolecule elastic foam

They mainly are 100% closed cell EVA foam, according to targeted use. EVA foams are resilient, closed cells to avoid water absorption and are producted either by rolls or blocks. Those elements are glued or thermobounded to constitute monolithic cocon or core, then tooled to requested shape before being encapsulated by tough reinforced SPUA coating matrix as here under.

Technical reinforcement cord fabric

They are applied according to building rules of soft composites reinforcement to strengthen the “matrix” and constitute the encapsulating coating for Jerryborg’s fenders, buoys and floats, etc. The main reinforcement fabric in Jerryborg is 1480dtex/3 chinlon tyre cord, which is widely used in pneumatic fender and tire products.

​ Maintenance Tips for mooring buoy maintenance are as follows:

• Make an inventory of all existing moorings, record holding power of each mooring, and perform updates about the depth and GPS locations of each mooring.

• Conduct regular checks (at least every four months) to determine conditions of buoys, ropes, chains, and anchors.

• Adjust and if necessary, replace small-sized mooring with bigger mooring in places where many large ships moor.

• Invite mooring users to participate and perform maintenance in many ways such as engaging in inspections, providing information about mooring condition to stakeholders, being involved in cleaning the ropes from moss or coral, and being directly involved in activities of replacement and installation of mooring.
